Matt Gutman is ABC News’ chief national correspondent, reporting for
all of the network’s programs and platforms, including “World News
Tonight with David Muir,” “20/20,” “Good Morning America,”
“Nightline” and ABC News Live.

Throughout his nearly 20 years with ABC News, Gutman has reported from
over 50 countries, covering a wide range of major global and domestic
events. He was on the ground in Israel the day after Hamas’s Oct. 7
attack on Israel and then for the next 18 months, extensively reported
on Israel’s resulting assault on Gaza. He was also on the ground
when Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022.

Based in Los Angeles, Gutman was one of the first network reporters to
respond to the fires that devastated the city in January 2025 and then
stayed on the fire lines for the next month. He has covered the
climate crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic downturns, the George
Floyd protests, mass shootings, and the evolving immigration landscape
and recent crackdowns on the undocumented.

Over the past decade, Gutman has also been one of the most frequently
used correspondents on “20/20,” working on blockbuster cases,
including the Karen Read murder trial. In addition to his work on
camera, Gutman has produced and hosted two highly successful true
crime podcasts, “Cutthroat Inc.” and the chart-topping “Devil in
the Desert.”

Gutman and his teams have been recognized and received multiple
awards, including multiple Edward R. Murrow and Emmy® awards, as well
as a DuPont, NABJ, Gracie, and Christopher awards.

In 2018, he authored “The Boys in the Cave,” which chronicled the
heroics of a crew of cave-diving misfits, the U.S. Air Force and Thai
Navy Seals, who helped rescue the 13 soccer players and their coach
stranded in a cave in Thailand. Most recently, Gutman authored the
bestselling “No Time To Panic,” an often-humorous chronicle of his
battle with panic attacks and his unconventional journey towards
treatment.

Gutman spent the early 2000s as a freelance print reporter based in
the Middle East, covering the war on terror before moving to Miami in
2008 as an ABC News radio correspondent. From 2008 to 2015, he
reported on consequential stories such as the Trayvon Martin shooting
and the BP Oil spill.

From 2013 to 2018, he hosted the ABC Television Network’s Saturday
morning show “Sea Rescue,” which won the 2016 Emmy for Outstanding
Children’s Series.

Gutman has two children and two dogs. He is a graduate of Williams
College in Massachusetts.
